Ethiopia traceability

April 15, 2021

As coffee is the most important export crop for the Ethiopian economy, all traded coffee is under strict control by the government and is not permitted except through the government agency ECX (Ethiopia Coffee Exchange). did not.

The grading method by this ECX inspection agency has mainly been grading according to coffee quality standards (Grade 1, 2, etc.) and grading by production area such as Yirgacheffe and Guji.

While this grading by production area expresses the unique flavor of the area where the coffee is harvested, it may actually be mixed with other things, and ECX does not disclose detailed information on the production area. For a long time, full traceability was not possible in Ethiopia.

However, with the liberalization of the coffee industry in 2017, the scope of ECX's role has decreased. Most coffee is still graded and traded through ECX, but exporters can now obtain detailed information on the green coffee beans, which was the most important, and traceability improved significantly.

We have been purchasing the highest grade coffee from Ethiopia since 2014, and we feel that the quality of our coffee is improving every year as traceability improves.

This year, I was unable to go to Ethiopia for the first time, so I purchased beans from Japan.

As of April 15th, this year's coffee purchases are being packed into bags.

The bag also has the Fuglen tern mark.

At the end of the month, the container will depart from Djibouti, a port in Ethiopia's neighboring country, for Japan, and is scheduled to arrive in late June.

Please look forward to Ethiopia this year as well.
