Antonio Dominguez grew up in a family of second-generation coffee growers.
He became familiar with coffee production from an early age, helping out in the coffee fields of his father's farm. In 2006, he bought his own land using the money he had saved from working in the United States and began producing coffee.
Mr. Dominguez's farm, Las Molas, is located in the Pozo Negro district, the heart of the Masaguana region. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, the farm has the beauty of a tourist destination, where wild flora and fauna coexist. In addition to coffee, the farm also grows vegetables, giving it the impression of a home garden, and is a small-scale operation typical of a microlot. During the harvest season, the farm employs only about five pickers, and is run by a family that does not rely solely on outside sources.
Initially, he produced commodity coffee, but switched to cultivating specialty coffee in 2010. However, the selling price was not much different from the previous price. Around 2014, through his encounter with Ronnie Gamez, former head of the IHCAFE laboratory and now an exporter, Dominguez realized the true potential of his coffee and decided to participate in the Cup of Excellence (COE).
He placed 4th in his first year, and the experience inspired him to continue participating in COE. For Dominguez, COE is a proud opportunity to see the hard work he puts into his coffee rewarded. He believes that the opportunities that COE offers producers will lead to stability for his farms and the coffee they produce.
With this success, Dominguez hopes that he will be able to improve other aspects of his farm, including better tools and equipment, and a better living condition for himself and his family. His story is a classic example of how hard work and perseverance can pay off, and shows the potential of small producers in the coffee industry.
